TN High School Students Successful at State and National SkillsUSA Conventions

In April of 2007, students from across Tennessee competed during the SkillsUSA Convention in Chattanooga. Dozens of contests were held, including radio production.

In radio production, students made up of two-person teams, were given a fact sheet about littering in Tennessee. The contest assignment was to produce three 30 second public service announcements for three different radio formats, encouraging those in the Volunteer State to stop littering. The students had just two hours to conceptualize, write, and produce the public service announcements.

Among those competing were Shane Dunn and Xavier Weddington from Overton High School. The Overton High students won the state contest, advancing to the national contest in Kansas City, Missouri in June where they finished second.

Mr. Paul Gubala, a broadcast instructor with Memphis City Schools served as the SkillsUSA state coordinator for the radio production contest.
